Things to Look for When Inspecting Mail
- Restrictive markings: PERSONAL, EYES ONLY, or SPECIAL DELIVERY
- Handwritten or poorly typed addresses
- Misspellings of common words
- Excessive weight
- Excessive security material such as masking tape, string, etc.
- Excessive postage
- Mailed from foreign country
- Addressed to title only or incorrect title
- No return address or can't be verified as legitimate
- Addressed to someone no longer with your organization
- Protruding wires or aluminum foil
- Rigid or bulky packaging
- Oily stains, discoloration or odor
- Lopsided or uneven envelope
- Crystallization or powdery substances on wrapper
- Ticking sound
- Shows a city or state in the postmark that does not match the return address
- Damaged envelopes or packages
